Exhausted But Can't Sleep - Let's Calm Your Nervous System

Can't sleep because you keep doing the maths? If I fall asleep right now, that's five hours… four and a half by the time I actually drop off… and then you look again and it's less. This guided meditation for sleep anxiety is for that exact moment — bone tired and wide awake at the same time, body heavy, mind bright, with the low hum of tomorrow underneath it all.

Every time you calculate the hours left, you ask your nervous system to stay ready. It doesn't know the difference between a deadline and a danger. So tonight we're not going to try to fall asleep — trying is effort, and effort is the opposite of sleep. We're simply going to stop counting.

If I fall asleep right now, that's 5 hours, 4 and a half by the time I actually drop off, and then you look again, and it's less. There's a particular kind of tiredness that only exists at this hour, bone tired, and wide away. For both at once, your body is heavy, your mind is bright. And underneath at all, the low harm of tomorrow, the day that you'll have to walk through on whatever sleep you manage to scrape together tonight.

Each time you calculate the hours, you're running a small reset once again. Your nervous system doesn't know the difference between a deadline and a danger. It just knows you've asked it to be ready. So we're not going to try and fall asleep, trying is effort, and effort is the opposite of sleep.

We're just going to stop counting. This is a meditation for sleep anxiety and clock watching, for the night when you lie there thinking. Welcome. This is calming anxiety.

I'm Martin, clinical hypnotherapist, former paramedic, and next week I launch Anchored the app with the night time timers and the sleep sessions ideal for this moment. Now find that comfy moment. Let the phone go dark. Let your head feel heavy on the pillow.

And if you can, turn the clock away from you. Let's begin focusing on the breathing, just the simple act of being mindful of the almost hypnotic rhythm, the rise, the pause, and form of each and every breath.

Let's leave five breaths in, five breaths out, that coherence breathing. Ready? Breathe in through the nose. Two, three, four, five, out.

Two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five, out.

Two, three, four, five, excellent.

This time let the body get even heavier with each out breath. Let the mattress take a little bit more of your weight. Let's do one more round. Breathe in 2, 3, 4, 5 out, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Breathe in 2, 3, 4, 5, Breathe out 2, 5, Breathe out. Breathe in 2, 3, 4, 5, Breathe out 2, 3, 4, 5, and relax.

Ever deeper. And if your mind wanders off to tomorrow, that's fine. That's what minds do. Let's do another round.

Breathe in 2, 3, 4, 5 out, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Breathe in 2, 3, 4, 5, Breathe out 2, 3, 4, 5, and relax.

Let the count go. Let the breath find its own way. Notice how the rhythm carries on by itself. Be a little slower than it was.

You are safe. You are here. There is nothing to fear right now. Now extend your awareness and truly feel the rhythm of your breathing with your thoughts, with every out breath.

Allow yourself to drift ever deeper, further and further down.

With every out breath, that sense of relaxation flows over you, over your forehead, softening the space between your eyes, down through your jaw, through your neck, down through the shoulders. Relax now. Further and further. And simply see these words in your thoughts as I say them.

Allow them to float, to become part of all that you are. Lying still in the dark is already doing me good.

I do not have to count the hours. I release the need to sleep and sleep comes closer now.

I have been tired before and I have always been okay.

I am calm and I am heavy. I am warm and I am drifting. Now feel the weight of the day, all of it, everything that you have carried here and let it drop. Leave it behind to pick up tomorrow.

Relax ever deeper. I am safe. I am here. I have been tired before and I have always been okay.

I release the need to sleep and sleep comes closer.

Take with you when you wake up and for tomorrow night. Here are your three daily caring tips. One, turn your clock or phone to face the wall and put your phone out of arm's reach so that checking the time stops being an option rather than a decision. Two, if you are still awake after about 20 minutes, get up.

Put somewhere dim and boring, if only for 10 minutes and then go back to bed when you feel sleeping. And three, keep the same wake up time tomorrow, whatever happens tonight. A steady morning does more fuel sleep than a long lie in ever will. Thank you for spending these 10 minutes with me my friend.

If sleep hasn't come yet, that's okay. You've spent 10 minutes resting instead of calculating and your body has taken more from that than you know. Time to drift off now. No need to come back into the room if you're listening late at night.

If this is during the day then gently open your eyes. Be kind to yourself today. Sleep come naturally. We didn't the app anchored out next Thursday the 13th.

There's a night time breathing session just for these moments. It's in the box breathing part. Check it out. Have a lovely day, a lovely sleep.

Just take care of all that you are.
